How Depression Became My Catalyst for Transformation
In a recent video, I shared how solo travel helped me overcome depression. Today, I want to dive deeper into my experience of navigating one of the darkest times in my life and how this experience can lead you through a deep personal transformation. If you’re struggling to find peace, purpose or joy, I hope my story helps you see that there’s a way through the pain.
Depression as a Signal for Change
For me, depression wasn’t just a mental health issue. It was a wake-up call that something in my life needed to change. My depression was triggered by a toxic workplace experience that left me feeling completely broken.
At the time, it felt like I was buried in a dark hole that I couldn't get myself out of no matter how hard I tried. I later realised that just like a seed needs to break open in the dark soil to grow, I had to go through my breaking point in the darkness to emerge as the next version of myself. More aligned with who I truly am.
"it felt like I was buried in a dark hole that I couldn't get myself out of no matter how hard I tried."
Looking back, I see depression as part of a natural cycle—one reflected in nature's metamorphosis, like a tadpole turning into a frog, a caterpillar turning into a butterfly and a seed turning into a plant. We are no exception to these natural processes of transformation.
It begins with a fall into darkness, followed by a phase of uncertainty, before gradually moving toward growth and transformation. This perspective completely changed how I approached my healing journey. It enabled me to stop fighting the changes happening and surrender to this natural process, as challenging as it was at the time.
The Stages of Transformation
Here’s how my journey unfolded:
The Dark Night of the Soul: This is the phase where everything feels unbearable. For me, it was marked by anger, sadness, and endless crying.
The Void: After hitting rock bottom, I entered a phase of exploration. I tried therapy, meditation, retreats, and other healing methods. It was a time of trial and error, but each step brought me closer to understanding myself.
Grounding: As I began to integrate what I learned, I started to feel more stable. My emotions settled, and I could finally see a way forward.
Purpose: Finally, I emerged transformed, with a renewed sense of purpose. I felt aligned with my true self and ready to help others on their journeys.

Tools That Helped Me Heal
Throughout this process, I found tools that made a huge difference:
Somatic Work: Understanding how emotions are stored in the body and learning how to release them.
Meditation: Calming my mind and creating space for self-awareness.
Inner Child Work: Addressing unresolved wounds from my past.
Retreats and Community: Finding safe spaces to process emotions and connect with others on similar paths.
